Chapter Eight

Under the darkened sky, barely disturbed by the timid whispers of dawn, the arena's tranquility was abruptly pierced. A brilliant flash of light erupted at its heart, painting the shadowed walls with a tapestry of dancing luminosity. The on-duty guards yelped in startlement, hands reflexively darting to their holstered weapons. Yet, as the brightness rescinded, revealing the cheerfully grinning figure of Xaset, their taut postures eased.

From the corner of the arena, where I was engrossed in inscribing glowing runes onto the stone-laid ground, I observed the spectacle with an amused smirk. The guards, quite amusingly, were still acclimatizing to the unpredictable outbursts of magic, each exceeding the spectacle of the previous.

"Chrix!" Xaset's jovial voice reverberated across the silent expanse of the arena, a deep, rumbling chorus that echoed against the cold stones. I momentarily halted my work, casting an upward glance towards the approaching figure of Xaset, a knowing smile adorning his striking face.

"Quite an early bird today, aren't we?" I jovially retorted, pushing my rune-etched goggles onto my forehead as I returned his grin. As Xaset neared, I enthusiastically slapped his arm, my gaze twinkling with intrigue. "And judging by that smirk, you've had quite a rollicking adventure last night."

A wave of boisterous laughter unfurled from Xaset, permeating the vast arena. His laughter, enchanting and comforting, was contagious, inducing a broad grin on my somewhat weary face. "Indeed, Chrix," he confirmed, his eyes sparkling with an exhilarating blend of satisfaction and anticipation. "Our plan has exceeded all expectations."

Interest piqued, I leaned in closer, intrigued by his words. "Oh, really? How so?" I questioned, my gaze landing on the pile of gleaming amulets he proudly brandished.

"Following your suggestion, I ventured into the city," Xaset began, his voice imbued with a profound sense of satisfaction. "The urban jungle was teeming with untapped potential, individuals yearning for a reality beyond their mundane lives. Thus, I extended them an invitation to a world they could scarcely fathom."

As his words cascaded over me, understanding crystallized within my mind, and a belly laugh echoed from my lips, earning a few startled glances from the guards. "So, we're anticipating a greater turnout than just a handful of curious folks?" I queried, a mixed sensation of amusement and anticipation swirling within me.

"Indeed," Xaset affirmed, his lips curving into a mischievous smile. "The dawn will bring with it quite a spectacle."

Our initial plan to gradually introduce magic to this world had, in one night, evolved into a larger enterprise. The grand sports arena, once a hub of exhilarating competition and rhythmic concerts, had transformed into the nexus of magical education.

The central pitch bustled with personnel dressed in black armor, their vigilant gaze ceaselessly sweeping their surroundings for any sign of disturbance. The aura of hushed anticipation enveloping the area was periodically disrupted by the resonating thud of synchronized footsteps echoing against the solid stone ground. In the heart of the arena, the inscribed runes shone with ethereal luminescence, casting a mystical glow across the surrounding space, heralding the dawn of a new era - an era of magic.
